Broken Arrow

Broken Arrow is a military code first used during the Vietnam War. When activated the Broken Arrow code indicates a friendly position about to be swarmed and over run by enemy troops.

Once the code is activate all friendly aircraft in the area are redirected from their existing missions and ordered to conduct continuous and sustained series of low altitude high attack vector airstrikes of the positions, with the intention of preventing the position from falling.

Because of the close proximity of enemy forces when a Broken Arrow call is issued, friendly casualties are usually high. As such this call is rare and only used sparingly by commanders in the field.
